The Forest of Dean is a fascinating region in Britain. It is located amidst the Vale of Leadon, the Wye Valley and the Severn Vale. Also referred to as the ‘queen of forests’, it is one of the best-known tourist attractions in the country. It was first designated by the Saxons for the purpose of hunting. Later on, as more people became aware of its potential, it became the hunting reserve of kings for several centuries. The Norman kings loved to hunt wild boar and deer and they introduced Forest law and officials known as Verderers who were given the responsibility of looking after the woods and the animals.
