Video Feature: Victoria Falls, Zambia

by Sherry on April 29th, 2008

If you’re into waterfalls, you’ve probably heard of Victoria Falls in Zambia, Africa. They’re not the highest falls in the world, but they’re still very beautiful and nothing to sneeze at as far as height goes.

What you may not know is that there’s a small area at the top of Victoria Falls called The Devil’s Pool. Twice a year, when the water level is low, you can jump into The Devil’s Pool and get swept right up to the edge of the falls - but not get swept over. The reason is that there’s a rock wall in the pool so you can go straight to the edge and even look right over, down to the bottom of the falls. Meanwhile, the river continues to roar past you just on the other side of the wall, sending water spilling down while you’re safe in the pool.

(Let me just say that with my fear of heights, there’s not enough money in the world to ever convince me to do it. There are some fabulous photos of people on the edge of The Devil’s Pool over here - not for the faint of heart!)

This pool is exactly the reason you should never go on vacation without a camera, and preferably one that is capable of shooting video. If you were just going to see the falls, a regular camera would be great, but wouldn’t you be disappointed if you found out that you could climb to the top and shoot video footage like this?

I would be perfectly happy to be the videographer whlie all the loons around me jump on in.

When you’re traveling, especially in an area that is new to you, you never know what you might see. The inspiration to take photos and shoot videos can strike fast and hard and you’ll want to be prepared. There’s no need to lug a huge camera around, many compact point and shoot cameras shoot excellent video and will be perfect for showing friends and family back home exactly how scary The Devil’s Pool can appear.

Nope. Not a chance in the world you’d catch me doing that. There’s a very good chance that I wouldn’t even get close enough to film it!

Arn’t Victoria Falls supposed to be, like, some of the highest in the world? I don’t know if I’d trust that itty bitty pool and my swimming skills not to get pushed over the side…
