Trippo lets your cell phone translate for you

by Sherry on April 18th, 2008

Since most people take their cell phones with them when they travel anyway, especially if it’s a business trip, it’s useful to have phone applications that can make life easier for you. Cellictica offers up Trippo, a mobile translation application.

It’s currently only available in English-Spanish, English-Italian, and English-French, but hopefully they’ll be expanding that over time, especially if it gains popularity. When you enter a sentence into the application, it not only spells out the translation, it will also speak it for you so that you can hear how it’s meant to be said - or you can even let the person you’re trying to communicate with listen to it if you’re not confident enough.

You can download it directly from the site to your phone and start using it almost right away. When you start using it you get a one day free trial after which you can license it for 3 days (approximately $3USD), 3 weeks (approximately $12USD), or an entire year (approximately $37USD). Prices are listed as approximate because the payment is in Euros, so it depends on the exchange rate.

OOOOHHH! Ok, so this is COOL. I’m going to check it out, but I’m interested in knowing if it has the following features:
    1) making up for mispellings due to text unprofeciencies.
    2) available when you don’t have a network or signal

Thanks for the post! So Excited!

    Hi,

I am one of the Cellictica guys behind this Trippo software solution.

mobal: Good feedback. We of course need to make a living somehow, theinvestment to develop this system is pretty high. I would be very interested to understand if you would accept advertisements everytime the translation occurs? We might for example consider a model where we give one freely selectable language free of charge, perhaps not with voice, but show then some ads. If you would like to get voice and/or other languages, we could charge something.

    What do you think?

    Thanks for your feedback!

    Hi Suz,

Great to see you like the idea!

    1) The version we have on production today, does not check spellings. We have seen that we need to have it and we will do it in some becoming release.

    2) Trippo works only when you are able to have a data connection. In Europe it’s not a problem anywhere, but I guess if you go to South America it might be an issue. We are simply not able to get enough processing power from the handsets which would facilitate good quality translations. In our minds poor quality is useless, so we have to have the connectivity to our server farm.

All these above technical complexities are hidden from the user, the user interface is kept very clean and easy to use.

Nice that you are commenting! We are still developing some pretty exciting stuff and we truly appreciate your direct feedback allowing us to improve our sw.

    Thanks,
    Kimmo

I don’t know, it would be nice to have something completely free, but I think the prices are very reasonable. The three day license comes to about a buck a day and that’s really cheap. It’s definitely cheaper than a language book!

Why is it people feel everything needs to be free? Quality products take time and effort to create. They also take money to host and distribute.

    — insert rant against the average American

People want things free or for next to nothing but yet they want to make a high salary with their job. I’m sorry folks but LOW PRICES and
    HIGH WAGES don’t mix.

It’s why people at Wal-Mart make chicken scratch. Wal-Mart needs to maintain their low prices for the masses so the employees that deliver it get squat and the products come from China and jobs that were shipped overseas.

sounds a very good idea, hope it catches on big time so we get a Tagalog version! It would really be a fun way to help you really learn a language in real life situations and bring about confidence.

Hi,im wondering how much it will cost to use ur internet/gps with this whilst in another country. Im thinking that it’ll be quite expensive. I live in the uk, have a mobile with vodafone and will be travelling to spain.. Any ideas on prices from roaming.

    Hi Natalie,

Vodafone has a network also in Spain, I think they have preferred rating structure for various Vodafone accounts allover. My worst experience is coming from SPain when Telefonica is asking for 5 EUR/MB. Trippo uses only a very small amount of data, so the costs will be minimal.

Above text is around 350 Byte and if you use voice functions, around 15 kByte. This means above text would cost roughly
    - nothing while not using speech
    - 8 cents while using speech

    best regards,
    Kimmo
