The new iPhone 3G - useful for travelers?

Everyone has heard by now that on July 11th, Apple is launching their new iPhone 3G. The good news is that it will be retailing for $199 unlike the first generation iPhone that ran 600 bucks.

I’m excited about it - but there’s something that could be useful for travelers that you may not know about yet. While watching the tech report on my local news show, they were discussing the “3G” aspect of it and how it can essentially function as a GPS device, tracking you as you walk down the street. The tech guy pointed out how great this could be for a city’s local businesses because they could do spot promotion.

Not pop up ads right on your phone because how obnoxious would THAT be? Rather it would be on-demand promotion. For instance, you’ve just landed in Las Vegas and you know little to nothing about where things are located. If this time of promotion pans out, you could essentially request to know what restaurants are in your area, which casinos, which hotels. The information would pop right up on the screen but instead of just your generic name and address, it could include information like descriptions. “Delicious Italian food with a homemade taste!” “Five star bedrooms with three star prices!” “Two for one drinks between 4pm and 7pm!”

The possibilities are endless. You could find whatever you need whenever you need it right on your phone - even if you’re not entirely sure what you’re looking for.

Would you use that kind of service? I know I would love it and I can see using it frequently.

And more importantly - are you going to buy the iPhone 3G?
