Swim cam!

by Sherry on July 25th, 2007

I can’t tell you how much I envy all the people who can pick up affordable waterproof cameras now for their vacations. Many years ago (almost ten years, actually) I went to Cancun and swam with dolphins, something I’d wanted to do just about forever. I had a camera, but sadly it was locked up with my clothes and backpack in a locker because it was a regular old 35 mm camera - not waterproof.

I wish I could have taken pictures of the dolphins. I got one taken for me by the park people at Xcaret (by the way, Xcaret is lovely but insanely overpriced), but how awesome would it have bene to take pictures under the water or while bobbing along side?

The Vivitar ViviCam 6200W digital camera is what I needed. It’s a 6 mp camera and while the yellow rubber casing is not the most attractive thing ever, it makes it waterproof up to 30 feet.

Aside from that, it boasts a 2-inch LCD, 16 mb internal memory plus SD memory slot, and it’s not at all expensive - you can grab one off Amazon for a mere $179.99. If you’re spending a thousand dollars or more to get to the ocean anyway, you may want to look into investing in an affordable waterproof camera so you can snap that shot of your husband doing somersaults in the Pacific or the coral off the coast of St. Lucia.
