Save time and hassle - plan ahead online

by Sherry on August 17th, 2007

Lifehacker had an interesting article up about things you can do online. They’re not all exciting, but they’re all useful and/or important, and the best part is you can do them at home in your pajamas, saving yourself time later.

It included two online tips that can come in handy if you’re traveling to see one of the National Parks or if you’d like to find and reserve the perfect camping spot.

To get yourself a pass to any National Park - including access to the holder and accompanying passengers in a vehicle as well as paid access for the holder and three accompanying adults - you can visit this site. The cost is $80 and it remains valid for one full year from the month of purchase. The site does recommend calling ahead to verify what exactly is covered since fees and coverage may vary from one site to the next, but at least you’ll have your pass in hand when the time comes.

Meanwhile, this site was listed as an excellent resource for locating campgrounds. You can specify whether you’re seeking a site that is suitable for RVing, plain old tent camping, sites with cabins, and more. From there, specify the state you have in mind for your camping trip, and you will also be given an option to specify a landmark or city you would like to be near. You can narrow down the search by specifying a park and the dates you’d like to go.

Once you’re ready to search, you’ll be given a listing of campgrounds, their distance from the landmark you specified, and you can click to read more details about the sites. When you’re ready to make your choice, you can check availability dates and go ahead and reserve your spot. Easy!

I have to say, the campground locater is awesome.

Both sites are only US-specific, which wouldn’t help me up here in Canada, but hopefully other countries will pick up on this and offer a similar site for non-US residents, because they’re extremely handy!
