Hire a goldfish to relax

by Sherry on January 11th, 2008

I’m all over exciting new travel gadgets, but here’s one that is so far from being high tech that it really threw me for a loop - Travelodge had cited research that 63% of the nation is sleep deprived due to stress (and traveling around can certainly disrupt your slumber too), so they’ve come up with an interesting solution. For no extra charge, you can request a fish therapy room when you check in.

In your room, you can then de-stress a little bit by watching some goldfish swim around for 15 minutes before turning out the light and going to sleep.

So far they’ve done a trial in two Travelodge hotels, one in Leeds and one in Birmingham. I wonder how well it worked. I can say that goldfish (or any slow moving fish, really) can be soothing to watch. I knew someone who calmed themselves down from panic attacks by watching her fish and I personally managed to make myself breathe through labor before leaving for the hospital by watching our goldfish swim around their tank, so that I wouldn’t freak out over the fact that my husband wasn’t back home yet and I felt like I might give birth any minute! If a few fish could calm me down in that situation, I’d be willing to give fish therapy rooms a try!
