Forget the forecast - check the Farecast!

by Sherry on July 29th, 2008

Farecast.com gives you predictions for lowest travel pricesMuch like a weather forecast can tell you if your day is likely to be filled with sun or rain, Farecast is an airline prediction website. Using hundreds of flight results from various airlines, hotels, and agencies, Forecast will make predictions on your travel plans.

Instead of just telling you where the lowest price is right now, it also predicts whether those fares of today are going to rise or drop over the next week. Airline #1 may have the lowest air fare today but airline #2 might be even lower tomorrow. They will also tell you if the rates for a hotel room you’re coveting are actually a good deal compared to its past prices.

If you’re curious as to how it all works, they explain in some detail about how their technology gathers the data over here. It’s more fun to pretend magical gnomes gather the information, but if you’re really dying to know, they explain it well for you.

You can also set up alerts so that you’ll receive a notice if there’s any news for a destination that you’re currently following. That way you’re kept up to the minute about any changes in prices.

I wish I had known about this site sooner, honestly. For all the money-saving sites out there, one that looks into the future gives you a way better shot of getting the great travel that you want for the lowest possible price.

Of course, keep in mind that just like the weather forecast can sometimes promise a sunny day only to have the skies pour down with rain, this website is useful but not infallible. Their accuracy may not always be 100%.

Let me know if you try it for your next trip!
