Cell phones on flights

by Sherry on July 16th, 2007

Mid-June, it was revealed that Airbus had won an approval for cell phone use on their flights. They were the first aircraft maker to win this type of approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency.

This new system, once it’s in place, will make it possible for passengers to make and receive calls, as well as use email and text messaging. Supposedly the cabin crew will be able to activate a voice-off mode which would stop the calls and only allow the silence of text messaging and emails, but I wonder if they’ll use it often what with trying to cater to passenger desires, especially business travelers.

While it sounds convenient to know that you can use your phone to keep in touch if you’re traveling on business (or even for pleasure), I’m not sure I like the idea of cell phones on a plane. It’s not for safety - although U.S. flights ban the use of cell phones due to concerns about interference with the plane’s electronics, the new system would take that into consideration. It’s more the invasion of privacy - my privacy! I hear cell phone conversations everywhere I go, from the grocery store to the bank. Last week I had to stand in line at the bank for 20 minutes (lesson learned - don’t go at lunch time!) and for 15 of those minutes I had to hear the girl behind me discuss her love life with her friend on the phone. Can you imagine being stuck on a six-hour flight while someone discusses stock options into their phone, or while someone has an argument with their spouse back home?

NO THANKS.
