Personalized playlist for your road trip courtesy of Amplified Journeys

Anyone can sit down and wade through their music collection to put together some sort of playlist to have something good to listen to while you’re on a road trip. But really, where’s the surprise in that? You know your own music, why not something different?
Amplified Journeys is an interesting site which will create a personal playlist based on some basic information. Simply go to their site and enter in your departure point and your arrival point on your road trip. Select the genre you prefer for your travels, and you’ll receive a special, tailor-made playlist. …read more

Flashback to the 80s with KITT-like GPS device

Flashback to the 80s with KITT-like GPS device

At first glance, the Mio Knight Rider GPS device seems like it’s not particularly different from any other GPS system. It gives you your usual CPS maps of Canada and the United States, with speech capabilities and step by step directions.
However, what sets it apart from your average GPS device is that the voice for the system is done by William Daniels who voiced K.I.T.T. on the hit show Knight Rider between 1982 and 1986.
Will it work any better than any other device? No, there’s nothing else mind-blowing about it. But it sure makes it …read more

Try YouMail to set up your voice mail while you’re away

Try YouMail to set up your voice mail while you’re away

When you’re traveling, you might focus primarily on where you’re going, how you’re getting there, how you’re getting around, what you’ll be seeing and doing, and all the things you need to make that happen.
What about what you’re leaving behind at home though? After all, if you’re vacationing in Greece, you’re not likely to be interested in the phone calls you’re missing at home. Voice mail will take care of that for you, but what it you’d like to personalize it a little further than the basic, “Hi, you’ve reached Sherry” message?
YouMail lets you compartmentalize your voice mail, …read more

Make your road trip more interesting with Carcade

Make your road trip more interesting with Carcade

I have to preface this by saying I think these students are brilliant. This is one of the coolest concepts I have ever seen and I can just imagine how well it would sell if it gets out of the prototype phase.
Students from the Berlin University of the Arts created a roadtrip game that goes way beyond backseat bingo. The game, called Carcade! takes the world around you and translates it into a computer game that you play right in the car.
(Passengers only, naturally. Drivers will have to wait until someone else takes over the wheel if …read more

Air Traffic around the world

Air Traffic around the world

This video is incredible. It shows, using a world map, the air traffic movement around the world over a 24-hour period.

Isn’t that amazing? It’s hard to believe there’s so much movement in one lone day up there in the skies!

Don’t send vacation mail you’ll regret later

Don’t send vacation mail you’ll regret later

Google is hilarious. They’ve come up with a system to stop you from sending mail you might later regret. Between specific times of the day (late night hours are the default but you can change them at any time), before gmail will require you to answer a series of math equations. If you can’t answer them, you won’t be able to send off that email.
It’s called Mail Goggles, and it’s technically meant to discourage those late-night drunken emails where you profess the love you still have for your ex, only to wake up in the morning, …read more

Make your GPS more fun with Pig Tones

Make your GPS more fun with Pig Tones

Sometimes I like to feature products and services that are really useful or important to travelers who wish to maintain their geek culture status – Google map mash-ups, tools for locating your luggage, those types of things.
On the other hand, sometimes it’s fun to have something, not because you really need it and not even because it’s actually useful for travel purposes. Sometimes you just want something because why the heck not?

Take Pig Tones, for instance. Pig Tones, or Politically Incorrect GPS offers you the chance to download different voices for your Garmin or TOMTOM GPS.
Why would you …read more

Pass the time in-flight with Virgin America’s Red inflight system

Not every airline’s movie choices are everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re a bit nervous about flying, a movie might not even offer enough distraction. If you’re looking for something a bit more interactive to pass the time on your flight, Virgin America has their Red inflight system to entertain you.
Red allows you to play a variety of fun brain games – against other passengers. For instance, you can play a word scramble game with someone ten rows up on the other side of the plane. You can also instant message or full on …read more

TripSay helps you figure out where to go

TripSay helps you figure out where to go

I can’t get enough of these sites that combine travel ideas with social networking. TripSay is a great little website that you can join to get recommendations for travel based on what you’re looking for in travel. It also takes into account other places that you’ve seen and how you rated them.
When I signed up, I set a profile for myself saying that I tend to look more for budget travel than luxury (that’s an understatement!), I like to be a little off the beaten track, I love multi-lingual more than just English-speaking, and that I seek out …read more

Let kids drive on your next road trip

Let kids drive on your next road trip

Or at least let them THINK they’re driving!

This kind of thing is a total lifesaver for someone like me. With two kids in our family and our most common method of traveling being via the car, anything that can make the drive a little less stressful is key. If the little one is tired she’ll fall asleep, and both kids enjoy listening to music, but all kids have their limits and that’s when you get the whining and fussing in the back seat.
If they have their own steering wheel to play with, they’ll ideally feel like …read more
