In fact (and please excuse the cliche) the off the beaten path kind of places that you stumble upon are always the most memorable part of my trips. So the big chains are great if you're after your daily fix of something familiar. But yep - local food always rules. My personal bibles are always the Rough Guides: food-wise, they've never let me down. The RG to Greece led me to an empty restaurant in Chania, Crete, serving some of the best food I've ever eaten. And in Rethymno just down the coast, it guided me to Kyria Maria - about the most eccentric and delightful eatery I've even had the good fortune to enjoy. Now, if Google Maps had a Rough Guides plug-in, then surgery couldn't wipe the smile off my face. Ah, but to avoid being a hypocrite, I should qualify my stance a bit… :)
