Avoid the gross hotels

Avoid the gross hotels

Here’s a handy website for you. Before you travel in the U.S. or the U.K. (nowhere else has been covered yet), be sure to check out TripAdvisor’s list of the ten dirtiest hotels to be sure you don’t book yourself there. Based on their reader/user reviews they compiled the ten hotels that were the grimiest, most disgusting, and occasionally bug-infested places to dare to rest your weary head.
Don’t get stuck sharing your room with germs and roaches – check their site out first!
Eww.

Portable Chopsticks

Portable Chopsticks

I’m a huge fan of Chinese food. Wait, no. Let me rephrase that – I’m a huge fan of GOOD Chinese food. I don’t much care for the food court variety, though I will eat it if I must, but oh, let me loose in Chinatown and I will eat more food than you ever thought possible. I’m also a fan of eating Chinese food with chopsticks. I dated a guy for awhile whose father is Chinese and he and his family gave me pointers so that I can now wield chopsticks to eat just …read more

Find pubs & inns in England and Wales

Find pubs & inns in England and Wales

Remember when I wrote about the rather amusing PDA service (pun only partially intended) that allows you to find strip clubs while traveling? If you like the idea, but not the “entertainment”, here’s something a little more tame along those same lines from Alastair Sawday’s.
It only works in England and Wales, but there’s likely a similar service in other countries as well. It uses your GPS system, cellphone, or PDA to send you the location of various pubs and inns in whichever area you happen to be in. No matter where you are in England, if you …read more

Protect your MP3 player from sand and surf

Protect your MP3 player from sand and surf

If you’re busy packing up for a lovely beach vacation because you’re just SICK OF THIS WINTER STUFF (I may be projecting a little here), then this WaterSeals waterproof MP3 pouch is a good addition to your suitcase. While it’s great to lie on the beach or beside the pool, listening to your own music if you don’t care for what’s being played on location, what’s definitely NOT great is ruining your mp3 player because it got splashed by a rogue wave or a fellow tourist attempting the perfect cannonball.
You can get this one for a very reasonable $16 …read more

Incline your laptop with a travel stand

Incline your laptop with a travel stand

A lot of people like getting their laptops out while they’re traveling on a plane (or a train), but if your drop-down tray is lower than your desk at home or work is, you might find yourself straining you neck and feeling uncomfortable. Inclinepro is a good solution, an aluminum stand that is sturdy and allows you to raise the screen up higher while angling the keyboard to a nice comfortable level for easy typing.
However, what makes it especially suitable for traveling purposes is that it only weighs a tiny seven ounces and folds up small enough to fit …read more

Smell your city of choice

Smell your city of choice

At first glance, this is one of the strangest “gadgets” I have ever seen or heard of – the AIR is a bubble that will use your olfactory memory to remind you of different cities. Hilda Kozari created three bubbles that replicate the smells of Helsinki, Budapest, and Paris.
Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? And yet, if you think about it, our sense of smell is the strongest of all five senses. I know that when I opened a box that contained some beautiful tablecloths that belonged to my late grandmother, it wasn’t the image of the cloths that …read more

Keep a flask under your foot

Keep a flask under your foot

From the “no WAY” files – let’s say you’re hitting Cancun or Punta Cana right smack dab in the middle of Spring Break and you want to party it up without the hassle of fighting your way through the crowds to get to the bar. Or maybe you’re so comfortable on the beach that you can’t even will yourself ot flop into the pool and float over to the swim-up bar.

Trouble parking?

Trouble parking?

Do you know what I hate about being in a car? Not the driving – I love a road trip. It’s the parking. Or rather, the driving around and around and. around. The desperate search for a parking spot or a parking garage that doesn’t cost more than a mortgage payment.
If you’re going to be in a major city in Canada or the U.S., you can go to Parking Hunter and check among over 2500 parking garages, residential parking spots, and lots. You can seek monthly parking rates if you’re going to be in …read more

RoboPorter will help to carry your load

RoboPorter will help to carry your load

If you happen to be at an airport in Japan, you may be lucky enough to witness a test drive – so to speak – of the new RoboPorter which is undergoing testing for a few hours per day. The robotic creation was designed to help weary travelers out by easing their load. Simply load your heavy baggage onto the RoboPorter, program the screen (currently only available in Japanese of course), and let it go! Once it’s off, you just need to follow along behind it and stroll nonchalantly, without a care in the world.
I have …read more
