Emergency travel shelter

While it could be useful under certain circumstances, I’m considering this to be one of the weirdest travel gadgets I’ve ever seen: The Cocoon Emergency Shelter!

If you’re traveling and find yourself in the midst of extreme conditions, you can hang the cocoon shelter from a tree or off a cliff face (!), or pretty well anywhere that you can think of. Climb inside the cocoon and the materials will keep you warm and dry no matter what’s happening outside.

It’s certainly interesting, I’d be a little concerned about using it in any kind of extreme weather, because when I think “extreme weather” I usually include high winds. I can guarantee you won’t find me willingly climbing into a bulb shaped shelter that is hanging from a tree or off the side of a cliff when there’s a lot of crazy wind going on around me!

On the other hand, I must confess that I’d like to hang one from the ceiling so that it’s just a foot or so off the floor and let my kids sleep in it – or sleep in it myself!

(It’s only a prototype design, sorry if you were thinking of buying one before your next hike into the wilderness!)
