Controversial x-ray machine

Controversial x-ray machine

Everyone loves gadgets that make travel easier, faster, or more enjoyable. However, here’s one gadget coming to JFK airport that might not make everyone smile in delight.
The new CBS 2 HD x-ray scanner is so thorough that it essentially does what Superman and other similar superheroes (and super villains) used to do in comic books – it scans right through your clothes. While it determines whether or not you are bringing anything threatening on board with you, it penetrates clothing so well that people may as well step out of their clothing and stand in front of everyone. …read more

Spooky vacations

Spooky vacations

What with Halloween being just around the corner (my favorite holiday of the year!), I thought it would be very apropos to provide you with some websites that will help you fulfill your love of all things spooky for your next getaway.

Over at About.com, there’s a great listing of the top haunted hotels in the United States. From a haunted cruise ship-turned-hotel to the haunted hotel that inspired Stephen King to write the scary The Shining, you’re sure to find somewhere to lay your head down while you keep an eye out for ghostly presences.
Meanwhile, if you’d prefer to …read more

Swim with your favorite songs

Swim with your favorite songs

I don’t know about anyone else, but when I think about vacations, swimming is almost always a factor, whether it’s in the ocean (yes PLEASE) or a pool (good enough for me!). If you’re at a resort, there will likely already be music playing at the pool, courtesy of your hotel’s DJ – I still have fond memories of the Omar, the cute DJ at the Arrecife hotel in Cancun. However, if you’re down by the beach or vacationing at a lakeside cottage, you won’t have a DJ. You may also not feel like annoying everyone around …read more

Pee in the car!

Pee in the car!

By mid-November, you can pick yourself up a little gear to make long road trips a little easier if you don’t mind the somewhat weird nature of it. Japan’s Kaneko Sangyo Company has created a travel-friendly portable toilet that packs easily in your car. It comes with a curtain to conceal yourself while you do your duty (doody? Sorry, couldn’t resist). When you’re done, there’s also a plastic bag to collect waste.
Essentially the toilet is made of cardboard and requires a quick assembly and a moment to place a water-absorbent plastic sheet inside. It’s small …read more

Virtual keyboard

Virtual keyboard

I desperately want one of these for no good reason – I just want one because it’s cool. Thinkgeek offers up a virtual keyboard that uses a laser to project an actual image of a QWERTY full keyboard on to pretty much any flat surface. You can hook it up to your cell or Blackberry so that you are using a tiny device to send email or IM without being stuck with the tiny keyboard. It even has a simulated key clicking sound if you need to reassure yourself that you’re actually typing. Meanwhile, the device …read more

Trip It!

Trip It!

I’m the sort of person who likes to be organized, I love the theory of it. What I don’t like is the ACTUAL organizing, perhaps because I’m missing that gene or something. Being disorganized on your travels can be frustrating, dangerous, and can lead to being bored and having to deal with chaos rather than just relaxing.
The travel organizing site TripIt will take care of the details for you with very little effort on your part. All you have to do is sign up and email TripIt your confirmed travel plans. From that, TripIt will …read more

Airline Meals

Airline Meals

This is a fine example of “why the heck didn’t *I* think of this first and cash in on it?!” If you’re going to be traveling by plane, now you can log on to Airline Meals and find out what you’ll be served on your flight. It lists pretty much every airline out there and you can check out the meals to be served.

This is kind of handy. When I flew to Cancun, the meal out was fantastic. They served us some roast chicken with rice, vegetables, salad, wine, and some sort of dessert and either …read more

Stay connected with the Palm Centro

Stay connected with the Palm Centro

The new Palm Centro is a fairly handy little gadget. Much smaller than the Palm Treos and Blackberry devices, the Centro is super portable and fits snugly in your hand. Being very lightweight is a nice bonus too.
It comes with a full QWERTY keyboard and it’s pretty small so you won’t want to compose your novel on the Centro, but if you need to fire off an email to your boss about the conference you’re attending or if you want to quickly IM with your spouse back at home while you’re waiting for a taxi, it’s perfect.
The speaker …read more

Take pictures while you’re getting around

Take pictures while you’re getting around

More and more camera companies are working to install GPS programs into their cameras. They know that although many of us like to use our cameras just to take photos of our daily lives, most of us definitely want to take a ton of photos when we go away on vacation. Of course, that’s also when we’re the most out of our element and require assistance to find our way around.
HP now offers up the rx5915 ior “Travel Companion”. It comes with built-in GPS as well as a 400MHz Samsung processor, 3.5-inch QVGA touchscreen display, 2GB of …read more

Wash and Go

Wash and Go

The last thing you want to do on your vacation is any of the mundane stuff you have to do at home, right? That’s why so many of us go to all-inclusive hotels or budget for restaurants, because we cook at home, who wants to do it in Cancun? Doing laundry is not the worst chore I have at home, but again, I’m not gung ho to do it in between sight seeing and dancing on the beach at midnight.
However, if your travel plans are lengthy, say two weeks or (if you’re really lucky!) longer, you might not …read more
