Mosquitoes are a nuisance in some parts of the world, but in many places, mosquitoes can wreak havoc in the form of diseases. If you’re not into high fevers, severe headaches, body aches, vomiting, rashes, and random nose and gum bleeding, you might want to try to avoid dengue fever. It’s a disease transmitted by mosquitoes, and although it’s not deadly like malaria, it also has no vaccine that you can get before heading to prime areas (such as Southern Asia). The only cure? Wait it out. Doesn’t that sound fun?

Kind of a fast way to ruin your vacation, to say the least. One of the best ways to protect yourself during travel in countries with a high probability of mosquito-borne disease is to protect your body with a liberal coating of deet insect repellent. Another option is to also try something like Ex Officio Buzz Off Insect Shield Clothing. The clothes in this line have permethrin which is a manufactured version of a natural insect repellent. It’s bonded on the fabric and it repels mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and more. (As a bonus they offer 30+ UPF protection as well.)

It should be noted that the protection lasts for a maximum of 25 washings, so some precautions would include: a) don’t wash them unless it’s necessary, b) use them in addition to deet, not as a replacement, and c) plan accordingly with extras if your travel is going to be extensive.
