Language Communicator
In Star Trek episodes, humans and other various aliens could all speak to each other in their own language and be understood. (You knew that, right? That all those alien races weren’t speaking English?) It was because of their high-tech Star-Trek-Ish translators. And now, you can feel like you’re on Star Trek too.
The ECTACO iTRAVL NTL-9C Talking 2-Way Multilingual Language Communicator is a translation device that can translate words and full phrases from Chinese, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and back. As you speak to it, it instantly translates aloud.
It runs on Windows CE and also contains a travel guide, a CIA World Factbook, audio books about travel, and an mp3 player. The basic handheld device comes with a 1 gig SD card and costs about $499. If it actually works the way it is meant to, that price is not all that unreasonable. It may be a bit of a shock to others to see you chatting at them through a gadget, but it beats the old stand-by of thinking that speaking really loudly in your own language is the best way to make yourself understood.
