Avis offers portable WiFi with car rental

This is so cool, my head just about exploded in joy. Avis is offering affordable WiFi with car rentals with the Portable WiFi Hotspot.

Along with your car rental, for $10.95 per day you can get a portable unit that plugs into your cigarette lighter; now obviously, you should not be surfing the ‘net while you drive, but think of the things you can do with this:

  • Are you lost? Pull over and check MapQuest to see where the heck you’re supposed to be going.
  • Arrive too early at a destination and have some time to kill before it opens? Check your mail or post to your blog about how COOL it is to have WiFi in your CAR.
  • Need to check out what good restaurants, bars, attractions are in your area? Park the car and look it up.

What is also very nice about this system is that they don’t just mean it’s portable because you can drive it around. It’s portable in the sense that when you arrive at the hotel, you can take it out, carry it into your room, plug it into a wall outlet, and get online as needed.

This could be so handy for business travelers and pleasure travelers alike, but business folk would definitely see the appeal of having the WiFi in your room and considering many hotels charge at least ten bucks a day for internet access anyway, you may as well get something you can take with you when you head out in the morning.

It’s already available in several major US cities including San Francisco and New York City, and it’s expected to come to several more in the next little while. Check the site to see if your destination is listed.

I love it! Surely all other car rental companies will follow suit. Scary though how we can no longer get by without internet access!

This must be something virtually new to the car rental industry. Here in the Philippines we could only give a complete service as our internet industry is not yet that of a high end and high technology compared to yours.

Thanks a lot for the information.
