My favorite gadgets this year

My favorite gadgets this year

As the year draws to a close, I’d like to share my favorite gadget posts since starting here in June 2007.
In no particular order:

The Olympus Stylys 7750 waterproof camera – Because I’m of the firm belief that you can never have too many cameras.

The iPod as a travel aide – because I fully confess that as a Canadian, I am REALLY JEALOUS that I can’t have an iPhone yet. Ppplllbbbtttt to you Americans with your cool phone!

The Avis portable WiFi with car rental deal – If you’re traveling, why not bring your Wi-Fi wherever you go?

The Vortex hand-powered blender …read more

A travel aid we didn’t need

Air France and OnAir have teamed up to make in-flight mobile phone service a possibility on international flights. With the service, passengers can send and receive SMS, send and receive email, and during the second trial phase they can make and receive calls as well.
They made mention of the service “being regulated to maintain passengers’ comfort and well-being” but I’m not entirely sure what that means and what the regulation will be.
According to Slashphone:
“At the end of the six-month trial, Air France will examine the feedback and comments made by customers to determine whether to launch this …read more

Keep warm with your laptop

Keep warm with your laptop

Many people I know complain about one common thing when it comes to flying (besides the food, I mean) – being cold. If you’re traveling with your laptop, here’s an easy way to keep yourself cozy while you type away in the plane.
This USB powered blanket will keep you toasty warm just like an electric blanket at home in your bed. And of course, this wouldn’t only be useful on a flight, you could use it in your hotel room for some warmth and a touch of home. The blanket features a zipper to remove the heating …read more

Wind up lanterns

Wind up lanterns

I feel weird about discussing camping when I have snow piled up against the sliding doors beside me, but camping is one of my favorite getaways, so I can’t help myself. Besides, perhaps you are lucky enough to be reading from a place that has a nicer climate than here and you can indeed go camping.

These little Cyba-Lite Lanterns require nothing more than a little muscle power to light your way. The lanterns have LED lights and you will get ten minutes of light for every minute you put into winding it up. If you need …read more

Necessities meet luxuries

Necessities meet luxuries

I have been in love with Swiss Army knives since I was a little girl. Something about the fact that you can pull something so tiny out of your back pocket and have knives, bottle openers, can openers, tweezers, and more at your disposal was amazing to me. I still carry one in my purse, but I definitely never went camping without one. Traveling can bring about odd mini-emergencies (even if the emergency is as simple as “I’m sitting here in a hostel in Europe with a bottle of wine and no corkscrew dammit!”) and the Swiss …read more

I want a transporter gadget

I want a transporter gadget

Christmas may be over according to the calendar but it’s not done for my family. Today we are going to visit my parents since we didn’t see them yesterday. While they don’t live far away, they do live about a half hour drive away. It’s not a big deal but it will be when we leave to come home tonight because my two-year-old is likely to fall asleep since she’s a big fan of bedtime. She’ll be tired and once we get into a dark car and start driving she’ll pass out.
Awhile ago I wrote …read more

The most important travel site of the year

The most important travel site of the year

If you have kids (or if you’re a kid at heart!), on Christmas Eve there is only one travel site that matters – the NORAD Santa Tracker! The site follows Santa for 24 hours, telling you his last known location. When I logged on this morning, he had just been in Fuji, Japan. Right now, as I type, he’s busy in Baza, Philippines.
My kids are ecstatic, especially my five-year-old who is old enough to understand what she’s seeing and to grasp a mini science lesson in which I used a globe and a lamp to show her …read more

Switch between business and pleasure

Switch between business and pleasure

Ideally, if you have to travel for business, you might hope to get in at least a little downtime to explore the city you’re in. I don’t know about you, but if I’m out walking on my own, I like to listen to some music at the same time. However, if you might get a call from your boss back at the office, you’re not going to want to miss the call just because you’re bopping down the street while Justin Timberlake is shouting in your ears about how he’s bringing sexy back.

For those with travel lust

For those with travel lust

The sad truth is that although many of might like to, not everyone can just travel whenever they want to whichever destination they want. Alas.
If you’re in that same position, the position of having travel lust but no means to get there right now, you can spend $35 instead for a shower curtain that will at least let you dream if you can’t be there in person. These shower curtains are seriously the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, each one showing a stunning black and white world destination. Bathe alongside the great pyramids of Giza, Egypt (that …read more

TripAdvisor revises site

TripAdvisor revises site

TripAdvisor has launched a new version of their already great site, so if you haven’t been there in awhile, be sure to check it out.
If, on the other hand, you’ve never been there before, it’s a site that I personally love using. By using TripAdvisor you can choose where your travel location is and then see a variety of lodgings, restaurants, attractions, and more. The entire site is updated by real people who have traveled so you get honest reviews rather than just reading a generalized write-up in a travel guide. People have uploaded photos, videos, and …read more
