Backup Your Photos With Picture Porter

Like any self-respecting nerd, I take my laptop when traveling. However, there are those who might not want to bring $2000 worth of electronics when, say, trekking through the Columbian jungle. If you just need somewhere to store your photos, why not bring $400 worth instead?

Digital Foci has announced the availability of Picture Porter - a portable digital photo album with 20/40 GB hard drive and multi-format card reader. Now you can safely transfer all your photos and videos onto Picture Porter without having to lug around a bulky laptop. It can easily be pocketed (at 5.2″ (L) x 2.8″ (W) x 1.2″ (H), the dimensions are pretty sleek)

As the photo illustrates, it accepts any quite of card and supports USB 2.0. However, at 5 inches long and 3 inches wide, there’s no way it’s frickin’ ‘easily pocketed’. Pocketed in a fat man’s cargo pants, maybe…

A General Theory of Tourism

I’ve been a bit delinquent around here the past couple of weeks–I’ll try to improve.

Today we find Travis’s General Theory of Tourism. It even features a Star of David graph.

The way I see it, all tourism can be reduced to six categories.

  1. Learning something new
  2. Eating something new
  3. Buying something new
  4. Watching/seeing something new
  5. Doing something (physically) new
  6. Meeting someone new

The lucky bastard formulated this theory while “jaunting” around Singapore.

Slice the Pie for Real in Seattle

Last week, Gridskipper mentioned an alternative to all them first-person shooters. It’s the real thing at Hostage Rescue Team Seattle. Take their 3-day course and satisfy your real-world killing needs:

When you arrive in Seattle, you’ll be met at the airport and transported to your hotel. There, you’ll be issued your uniform (1 set of Digital camo BDUs with personal name tapes and patches, two black UnderArmour moisture wicking T-shirts, one Digital camo boonie hat) which you will keep after the operation concludes. You will also be given your own training manual and course outline. Sleep well, because the non-stop training and operations will begin at 0730.

0730! That’s a bit early, bonnie hat notwithstanding.

For the non SWAT-savvy, the title of this post refers to an entry procedure called ’slicing the pie’. Will Pate, Halo expert, explained it to me the other day. You can read about it on this page.

Apple’s iTunes Phone is the Motorola ROKR E1

Finally! A new way for Apple cultists to show their love for the Jobs and his immortal vision. Witness the Motorola ROKR (that’s no doubt pronounced ‘rocker’). It’s pictured at left, though don’t ask me what kind of nuts those are. From the good folks at Gizmodo:

To clear up the first big question: 100 song capacity, and it uses the iTunes interface. It’s a quad band GSM phone, color screen, built-in camera with stereo speakeres and a mobile headset. One button access to iTunes, USB 2.0 connection for transferring songs and random autofill or manuall fill.

I’m all over this badboy. I always feel a little ridiculous carrying around both my cell phone and my iPod. They’re a natural convergence point. For Canadians (like me), apparently the, er, ROKR, will be released in mid-September with Rogers. You can check out the forthcoming TV ads and a demo online.

Also from Apple, the ‘impossibly small’ Apple Nano. Peace out, Apple Mini. Flights of angels and all that.
