Fire and Forget Video Cameras
I was just saying to myself, while tabulating sloths in the boreal valleys of Ecuador, “wouldn’t it be great if we had more things that we could just throw away?” Thankfully, the folks at Pure Digital Technologies have satisfied my need with disposable video cameras:
The makers of the $29.95 camera and CVS hope the device will do for video what one-time-use cameras did for film sales: dramatically increase the market.
“The one-time-use camera revolutionized the film market,” says Grant Pill, director of photography for CVS, the nation’s No. 1 drugstore chain. “We see the same thing happening with video.”
This is actually a great idea. I’d be reticent to take my $1000 digital video camera sloth-hunting or river-rafting or anywhere wet, humid and extreme. On balance, the ‘disposables’ will probably be re-used, and there will be no tapes to throw away.
